#1 - Hypomagnesemia in beef cattle

Abstract in English:

Hypomagnesemia is a major cause of death in grazing beef cows in countries of the Southern Hemisphere such as Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. Here we review the literature on hypomagnesemia in beef cattle and describe an outbreak in Uruguay. The disease occurred in late autumn, affecting 6 to 11-year-old Aberdeen Angus and Hereford x Aberdeen Angus lactating multiparous cows in good body condition, grazing on natural grasslands that had been improved by fertilization and sowing of seeds of ryegrass and oat. Approximately 40 out of 225 cows were affected and 24 (10.7%) died. A presumptive diagnosis of hypomagnesemia was established based on sudden death, acute neuromuscular clinical signs, epidemiological data, and the response to Mg administration. The diagnosis was confirmed by detecting low Mg concentrations in serum (0.47-0.57mmol/L), vitreous humor (0.47-0.80mmol/L), aqueous humor (0.66mmol/L) and cerebrospinal fluid (0.59mmol/L). The largest component of the diet corresponding to fast-growing and exuberant forages of ryegrass and oat had high concentrations of K (3.48%), N (4.38%) and P (0.94%), suggesting secondary hypomagnesemia. In addition, the K/(Ca+Mg) ratio was 2.38 in forages of ryegrass and oat (reference value: 2.2), and 0.15 in the soil (reference value: 0.09), which represent risk factors for hypomagnesemia. In conclusion, hypomagnesemia is an important cause of mortality in beef cattle grazing improved natural grasslands in Uruguay and it can be easily prevented by correct seasonal Mg supplementation.

#2 - Bovine digital dermatitis in the Brazilian Amazon biome and topical treatment with Copaifera reticulata oil

Abstract in English:

Bovine Digital Dermatitis (BDD) was studied in crossbred dairy cows grazing in Rondon do Pará, in the state of Pará, as well as in Açailândia and Cidelândia, in the state of Maranhão, Brazilian Amazon biome. The digits inspection from the dairy cows during milking was performed in ten farms comprising four visits (August and November 2016; April and July 2017). The cows were kept all year in pastures, and were mechanically milked on concrete floors and the animals were protected against the rains in eight farms, maintaining a daily cleaning, however, it could not be found a concrete floor in pre- or post-milking to ensure milking parlor on three farms. Manual milking on no concrete floors was performed in two farms. No preventive measures against hoof lesions were adopted. The BDD prevalence was 1.3% (22/1664), and no statistical difference among rainy or no rainy season was obtained (p = 0.72). The BDD lesions were classified according to “M system” (M0 = no lesion, M1 = active ulceration <2cm, M2 = active ulceration >2cm, M3 = healing stage, M4 = chronic stage, M4.1 = M4 with active ulceration). Regarding the 22 BDD lesions observed, 22.7% (5/22) were M1 stage, 36.4% (8/22) M2, 22.7% (5/22) M3, 13.6% (3/22) M4 and 4.5 (1/22) M4.1. Hypertrophic hairs at the edges of the lesions caused by fly larvae of genus Cochliomyia spp. as well as alterations on the hoof were also observed. Topical treatment was performed in six BDD lesions with a raw extract from trees of the genus Copaifera reticulata (Copaiba oil) and compared with the treatment of salicylic acid paste in five BDD lesions. The lesions were protected with a bandage for seven days and followed weekly until recovery. The complete therapeutic responses were 83.4% (5/6) and 75% (3/4), respectively, with an average time of seven weeks. The BDD in the Amazon biome occurs in low prevalence, not seasonal, and presents macro and microscopic features similar to BDD lesions from dairy cattle kept in free-stall housing. The treatment with copaiba oil showed similar results to the treatment of salicylic acid paste and can be used in control measures to BDD in the Amazon biome.

#3 - Clinical-epidemiological, anatomic-pathological, histochemical and immunohistochemical characterization of renal cystadenocarcinoma-nodular dermatofibrosis syndrome in 11 German Shepherd dogs

Abstract in English:

Eleven cases of renal cystadenoma/cystadenocarcinoma-nodular dermatofibrosis syndrome (RCND) are described in German Shepherd dogs diagnosed from January 1994 to January 2018 at the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory of the “Universidade Federal de Santa Maria” (LPV-UFSM). The study sample was composed of eight male and three female dogs at a ratio of 2.67:1. Age ranged from six to 12 years (mean=8.7 years). The main clinical signs reported in descending order of frequency were multiple cutaneous nodules (nodular dermatofibrosis), dyspnea, anorexia, weight loss, recurrent hematuria, vomiting, and polydipsia. Results demonstrated that it is not always easy to clinically recognize this syndrome, but its peculiar anatomical-pathological characteristics allow safe diagnosis. Histologically, it was possible to detect all phases (cysts, papillary intratubular hyperplasia, and cystadenomas or cystadenocarcinomas) of a possible pathological continuum of the renal lesions. Uterine leiomyomas were observed in only one of the cases. Through histochemical techniques, it was possible to identify the presence of type I collagen in both cutaneous and renal lesions and consider its possible involvement in the pathogenesis of renal cystadenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) showed partially satisfactory results in the staining of epithelial cells of renal cysts and neoplasms for pan-cytokeratin.

[Profile of farms with pastures invaded by Pteridium arachnoideum in northern Mato Grosso and prevalence of bovine enzootic hematuria.] Alexandre Ferronato 1200, Distrito Industrial, Sinop, MT 78550-000, Brazil. E-mail: furlan@ufmt.br The profile of 40 farms with pastures invaded by Pteridium arachnoideum in northern Mato Grosso as well as the prevalence of bovine enzootic haematuria (BEH) in dairy and beef cattle in the region are described. The BEH was observed in 15/40 properties with prevalence rates ranging from 0.8 to 16.6%. Aspects related to the deployment of pastures and management are discussed. In most farms where BEH occurs, the pastures were highly invaded by the plant, whereas in most farms where HEB does not occur the pastures had less than 10% of Pteridium arachnoideum. Deforestation and the use of fire were determinant factors in the invasion of the paddocks by P. arachnoideum.

#5 - Cattle in silvipasture system with eucalyptus: a risk for Ramaria flavo-brunnescens poisoning, 34(7):659-662

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Alves D.M., Marcolongo-Pereira C., Tavares L.A., Molarinho K.R., Raffi M.B., Schild A.L. & Sallis E.S.V. 2014. [Cattle in silvipasture system with eucalyptus: a risk for Ramaria flavo-brunnescens poisoning.] E-mail: esvsallis@yahoo.com.br The aim of this study was to describe and discuss the epidemiological aspects of spontaneous outbreaks of poisoning by Ramaria flavo-brunnescens in cattle maintained in silvipasture system in Southern Brazil. Three outbreaks of the disease between 2011 and 2013 were diagnosed. In two outbreaks morbidity was 35% and 37.4%, and the mortality rate was 36.12% and 16%, respectively. The fatality rate in these outbreaks was 45.71% and 96.55%. The diagnosis was confirmed by the epidemiology and the presence of the mushroom in the areas where the cattle grazed, in addition to the clinical signs, gross and histological lesions. The climatic data of temperature, humidity and rainfall were statistically analyzed and no significant differences were observed between the years 2007-2013. It was not possible to confirm that the presence of R. flavo-brunnescens in eucalyptus groves is associated with rainy autumns and warm dry summers. It is likely that other factors are associated with the presence of the mushroom in the woods and its toxicity. The soil and type of forest planted may also determine the presence of the mushroom in the area. It is possible that the species of eucalyptus is also a determining factor for the occurrence of the mushroom, since in many eucalyptus forests R. flavo-brunnescens does not occur. The recognition of the mushroom by workers and farmers and the time for its development in the eucalyptus woods is essential to minimize economic losses caused by the poisoning.

E-mail: mgribeiro@fmvz.unesp.br The silvopastoral system is characterized by increasing the production of milk with a greater number of cows per hectare due to the higher amount of protein in the diet. In silvopastoral system cows are fed in addition to pasture, small trees and shrubs. The aim of this study was determinate the main indicators of milk quality and mastitis causal agents in cows bred on silvopastoral system. We evaluated the composition (fat, total protein, lactose, solids, dry extract, nonfat dry and urea nitrogen), somatic cell count (SCC), total bacterial count (TBC), occurrence of clinical and subclinical mastitis, microbiological isolation, in vitro antimicrobial sensitivity profile and detection of antimicrobial residues in milk produced by 100 cows raised in silvopastoral systems, as well as the bulk tank and churns in farms of Cauca Valley, Colombia. The concentration of the major constituents of milk were 3.24% fat, 3.27% total protein, 4.40% lactose, 10.62% dry extract, 8.57% nonfat dry and 15.82mg/dL urea nitrogen, while the bulk tank and churns was 3.51% fat, 3.20% total protein, 4.34% lactose, 11.72% dry extract, 8.47% nonfat dry and 14.57mg/dL urea nitrogen. The cell count of the cows and the bulk tank was 141,252.75 CS/mL and 363,078.05 CS/mL respectively. The TBC mean in cows and the bulk tank was 4,466.84 CFU/mL and 24,547.01 CFU/mL respectively. The main microorganisms isolated from the udder cows were Corynebacterium bovis, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus hyicus, Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus dysgalatiae, while the bulk tank were identified more often Streptococcus spp., Enterobacter cloacae, Hafnia alveii, hemolytic Streptococcus and Streptococcus spp. Antimicrobial residues in cow milk and bulk or churn were detected in 30% and 86% respectively. The silvopastoral system showed to be good alternative to milk production in cow. However is important the care with antimicrobial residues in milk and the analysis of all quality parameters to ensure a differentiated product.

#7 - Sheep grazing for control of Senecio spp. according to infestation level and phenology,

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Karam F.C., Moraes J.C. F. & Schild A.L. 2013. [Sheep grazing for control of Senecio spp. according to infestation level and phenology.] E-mail: fernandockaram@yahoo.com.br Senecio spp. poisoning is the major cause of death among cattle in Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. There are no efficient therapeutic measures, but sheep are more resistant and have been used as natural control. The aim of this paper was to assess the efficiency of sheep grazing in different seasons of the year (spring-winter), determining the best time for interference in plant phenology, especially in reproductive phases, and relative Senecio infestation in the pasture. The experiment was conducted on two farms located in the Campanha region of RS, in 50x100m plots, with water availability and with different levels of infestation by Senecio spp. The level of infestation, regardless of the species, was determined by the average number of plants at three random sites measuring 2m in diameter each, within the area of study. In 12 phenological observation points defined in each plot, one to three plants showed low infestation (IB) and four to six plants revealed average infestation (IM), both located on farm A; seven to nine plants had high infestation (IA) and 10 or more plants showed very high infestation (IMA), located on farm B. The plots were on different farms because it was not possible to find all infestation levels on a single farm. The following parameters were evaluated on day 0 (before the introduction of sheep) and every 15 days during the spring of 2009 (year 1) and the winter and spring of 2010 (year 2): number of plants of the Senecio species, reproductive phenophases, vigor, and plant consumption by the sheep. Control was carried out in year 2, in six phenological observation points, which were identical and contiguous to each plot, without sheep grazing, with regular cattle and horse grazing, following the rotation scheme used on the farms. At baseline, each control had the same level of infestation by Senecio spp. corresponding to the experimental area. Between the spring of 2009 and the winter of 2010, the sheep were removed and both cattle and horses were allowed to graze on the plots. The statistical analysis consisted of simple regression and the means were compared by covariance. Reproductive phenophases, vigor, and plant consumption by the sheep, which did not have a normal distribution, were compared by Wilcoxon nonparametric test. The results demonstrated that sheep grazing had a negative impact on the development of Senecio species and that, in winter, it inhibits their future reproductive phenophases. Given the phenological and environmental conditions, as well as the risk for the cattle, the control of Senecio spp. by sheep grazing was more efficient in winter than in spring. Due to the negative impact on plant growth, mainly with regard to reproductive phenophases, with reduction of seed production, sheep grazing is an alternative for the biological control of Senecio spp., which will contribute to reduce their infestation in the medium and long term in RS and, consequently, the damage to cattle breeding.

E-mail: depellegrini@yahoo.com.br The objective of this research was to evaluate the parasitic infection of lambs and larval contamination in pasture of ryegrass submitted to nitrogen fertilization. We used 72 weaned lambs that were distributed into 12 experimental units (paddocks) with six lambs (animal testing) in each one. The experimental design was randomized blocks, with four treatments (N rates), with three replicates (paddocks). Regarding the number of eggs per gram of feces, there was no statistical difference between the different levels of nitrogen applied to the pasture. In relation to the number of recovered larvae from the pasture, there was a significant effect (P <0.05) through the linear decrease in accordance with the rates of nitrogen. No statistical difference was found when evaluating the distribution of larvae over the strata of the pasture. The interpretation of the stool culture revealed a predominance of the genera Haemonchus spp. and Trichostrongylus spp. independent of the dose of nitrogen applied.

#9 - Proliferative analysis of trophoblastic cells in cattle.] Análise proliferativa nas células trofoblásticas em bovinos, 31(6):538-542

Prof. Dr. Orlando Marques de Paiva 87, Cidade Universitária, São Paulo, SP 05508-270, Brazil. E-mail: roseeli@usp.br The aim of the present study was to evaluate the cell proliferative activity, by AgNORs number, in different regions of bovine placenta throughout gestation. A total of 28 bovine placentas were separated into four groups: group I (60 to 120 days), group II (121 to 170 days), group III (171 to 220 days), and group IV (221 to 290 days). It was found a greater number of AgNORs in giant trophoblastic cells (GTC) when compared with mononuclear trophoblastic cells (MTC) (p<0,001) in all regions and gestational groups analyzed, that confirms their intensive synthesis activity in trophoblast epithelium. The central region of the placentome begins an intense proliferative activity in group II, observed by clusters, while placentomes edges showed a higher number of clusters on group III. These data suggest that the central region of the placentomes began an intense proliferative activity prior to its edge, both declines at the end of pregnancy. Interplacentomal area showed a higher number of AgNORs in the group IV, suggesting a higher proliferative activity of these cells at the end of pregnancy. The results of this study indicate that the proliferative activity, as determined by the amount of intranuclear AgNORs, exhibits patterns that are not only specific to each type of trophoblastic cells, but also for each specific region of bovine placenta throughout pregnancy.

Abstract in English:

Rech R.R, Fighera R.A., Oliveira F.N. & Barros C.S.L. 2004. [Granulomatous meningoencephalitis in cattle grazing vetch (Vicia spp).] E-mail: claudioslbarros@uol.com.br Granulomatous meningoencephalitis was observed in 7 out of 8 adult dairy cows affected by vetch-associated systemic granulomatous disease, although there was no neurological signs associated with the condition. The cellular inflammatory infiltrates were located in the leptomeninges and as perivascular cuffings within the brain and consisted of epithelioid macrophages, lymphocytes, plasm cells and eosinophils. These inflammatory changes varied from mild to severe from animal to animal and among different brain regions of the same animal. Perivascular cuffings were usually more marked than the leptomeningeal infiltrates. Affected brain regions, in decreasing order of intensity, included diencephalon through the level of massa intermedia, mesencephalon at the level of rostral colliculi, pons and cerebellar peduncles, medulla at the level of obex, frontal lobe at the level of the genu of the corpus callosum, and cerebellum. The character and the distribution of the inflammatory changes are emphasized regarding the differential diagnosis with other diseases and lesions of the bovine central nervous system in the context of the Brazilian surveillance program for bovine spongiform encephalopath.
