Allergic dermatitis caused by Culicoides in Texel sheep in the state of Pará, Brazil. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 37(4):301-306. Programa de Pós-graduação em Saúde Animal na Amazônia, Universidade Federal do Pará, BR-316, Castanhal, PA 68740-000, Brazil. E-mail: griet@ufpa.br Allergic dermatitis was studied at a farm located in the municipality of Castanhal in the state of Pará, Brazil, from December 2009 to December 2012. Clinical and epidemiological data were obtained during monthly visits to the farm. Skin biopsies were performed for histopathological examinations, and insects were captured with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) traps and live-bait entomological vacuum devices. The property housed a herd of both genders, with 45 Santa Inês sheep of different ages and 72 Texel adults. Of the 72 Texel sheep, 56 were affected. Of these, 24 exhibited alopecia, erythema, edema, and crust in the ears, on top of the head, and less often, around the eyes. In addition to the lesions described above, 14 animals exhibited hyperpigmentation of the ears and/or around the eyes and crust in the nose. Another 18 animals exhibited chronic lesions characterized by deformed and thickened ears, alopecia with hyperpigmentation, and in most cases, secondary bacterial infections with abscesses and/or myiasis. Some of these animals had lost part of their ears. Histologically, the lesions were characterized as orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, vacuolization, and necrosis of epidermal cells. An inflammatory infiltrate was present in the dermis, which was composed mainly of eosinophils and macrophages, some lymphocytes and mast cells, and few neutrophils, in addition to edema and collagen deposition. The Santa Inês sheep were not affected. Among the captured insects, 294 specimens of Culicoides (Hoffmania) plaumanni Spinelli, 57 specimens of C. (Hoffmania) insignis Lutz, and 27 specimens of other Culicoides species were identified. We conclude that C. plaumanni, C. insignis, and possibly other Culicoides species are involved in the etiology of allergic dermatitis in Texel sheep in the state of Pará. Santa Inês sheep in the same region and under the same conditions were not affected, which suggests lower susceptibility of these animals.

E-mail: veterinariojsv@yahoo.com.br This paper describes the clinical and histopathological features of allergic dermatitis in dogs diagnosed the metropolitan region of João Pessoa, Paraíba. From September 2014 to September 2015 a total of 90 dogs with skin lesions was studied. Twenty-four cases showed changes consistent with allergic dermatitis, in 12 males and 12 females. The age of dogs ranged from 3 months to 15 years. Atopic dermatitis was the most common, affecting 58.33% (14/24) of the dogs, followed by food hypersensitivity dermatitis at 25% (6/24), allergic contact dermatitis at 8.33% (2/24), a case of allergic dermatitis flea and one case of drug hypersensitivity, which represented 4.17% respectively. Gross lesions included hypotrichosis, hyperpigmentation, comedones, erythema, alopecia, xerosis, erosions, ulcers, and exudates. Anatomically distributed was on face, head, neck, thoracolumbar, lumbosacral, flank, limbs and abdomen. The most common microscopic lesions were hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, spongiosis and exocytosis of lymphocytes in the epidermis. In the superficial dermis was observed perivasculitis, perianexite and in some cases pigmentary incontinence, edema, dilated lymphatic vessels and sweat glands. Histopathological examination associated with medical history, clinical examination and skin examen are important tools for the diagnosis of allergic dermatitis in dogs, as well as for associated therapeutic measures.

Abstract in English:

ABSTRACT.- Justino R.C., Cardoso G.S., Trautwein L.G.C., Alves R.I.A., Flaiban K.K.M.C. & Martins M.I.M. 2016. Evaluation of physiological parameters of dogs submitted to uterine lymphatic mapping using patent blue V dye for anaphylaxis detection. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 36(12):1209-1214. Departamento de Clínicas Veterinárias, Universidade Estadual de Londrina, Rodovia Celso Garcia, Londrina, PR 86061-900, Brazil. E-mail: imartins@uel.br Lymphatic mapping has been performed in humans and dogs. Although several cases of anaphylaxis have been reported in humans, there are no such reports in dogs. The objective of this study was to identify the occurrence of adverse reactions to patent blue V dye in bitches undergoing uterine lymphatic mapping procedures using cardiovascular and hematological evaluations. The experiment was performed in 14 mongrel bitches without any reproductive disease, randomly assigned into two equal groups (PBV- uterine lynphatic mapping and OHE; Control - OHE only). The animals were submitted to pre- and postoperative hematological and serum biochemistry exams (7 days). The anesthetic protocol was: sedation (morphine and acepromazine), induction (propofol), maintenance (isoflurane), transoperative analgesia (fentanyl). Systolic blood pressure was monitored throughout the procedure and arterial blood gas analysis was performed immediate pre and postoperatively. For lymphatic mapping was injected patent blue V in the uterine wall, 10 minutes before OEH. Comparisons between the pre- and postoperative parameters within the same animal were performed using the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney test. To compare the values between control and PBV group was obtaining the difference between the pre and post of each group, subjected to the Mann-Whitney test (significance of 5%). Differences were observed (P<0.05) between the pre- and postoperative evaluations in the PBV (total protein and the albumin serum), in both groups (arterial partial pressure of oxygen) and in the Control (arterial oxygen saturation). There were no signs of adverse reactions to the patent blue V dye in the healthy bitches submitted to lymphatic uterine mapping.

Evaluation of physiological parameters of dogs submitted to uterine lymphatic mapping using patent blue V dye for anaphylaxis detection.

ABSTRACT.- Brum J.S., Martins T.B., Tessele B., Giaretta P.R., Riet-Correa F. & Barros C.S.L. 2012. [Dermatitis associated with consumption of defatted rice bran in cattle.] E-mail: claudioslbarros@uol.com.br Dermatitis has been observed in Uruguay and Rio Grande do Sul, in cattle supplemented with defatted rice bran in an amounts equivalent to 1% of body weight. An outbreak of dermatitis in cattle associated with consumption of defatted rice bran in Rio Grande do Sul, is herein described. Out of a total of 26 3-year-old cattle consuming this ration, seven had lesions that were observed after 24 days on the ration. The lesions were observed in the distal hind limbs and were characterized by areas of alopecia with marked thickening of the epidermis with crust formation imparting a thicken and fissured aspect to the skin. The histological lesions observed in these cases were characterized as moderate superficial perivascular chronic dermatitis focally extensive, with irregular acanthosis and serocellular crusting. The gross lesions observed, together with epidemiological data, allow for a diagnosis of dermatitis associated with the consumption of defatted rice bran. Histologic changes, although not pathognomonic, are typically described in this disease.
