Abstract in English:
The aereal parts of Vernonia mollissima Don, in its sprouting stage, were given experimentally to sheep and cattle. In both animal species an acute lethal poisoning was reproduced by the administration of single doses of the plant material. In cattle, additionally a subacute lethal poisoning was caused by the administration of repeated daily doses. It was not possible to induce a chronic poisoning with liver cirrhosis. In sheep, the clinical manifestations in the acute poisoning were: anorexia, rumen atony, apathy, somnolence, a staggering gait; the animals remained for long periods in sternal-abdominal decubitus, and finally fell on their side, had tachypnea and died. Post-mortem exarninations revealed in the liver areas with nutmeg appearance and others of yellowish colour, in the endocardium hemorrhages, and in the omasum, colon and rectum dried contents. Histological exarninations revealed massive necrosis of the liver parenchyma. In cattle, the clinical-pathological manifestations were also those of liver distrophy, similar to those observed in the sheep. The clinical manifestations of the subacute poisoning in cattle were characterized by anorexia, apathy, rough hair coat, dry muzzle, constipation, frequente sternal-abdominaldecubitus, absence of urination during the last days, and death. Post-mortem findings were an orange discoloration of the liver and marked perirenal oedema. Histological exarninations revealed severe necrosis of the kidney tubuli and moderate necrosis of the liver parenchyma. In those calves in which chronic poisoning was tempted, and which afterwards were euthanasied, only slight microscopic alterations were observed in kidney and liver. The data obtained in the experiments indicate that mortalities in sheep, which occur in southern Mato Grosso do Sul and in which symptoms and lesions analogous to those obtained experimentally are observed, may be caused by the ingestion of V. mollissima. On the other hand, the results of the experiments do not allow to relate in this region, possible cases of hepatic cirrhosis, to the ingestion of this plant species; but clinical cases of subacute course, with manifestations of renal disfunction, may be attributed to poisoning by V. mollissima.

A study was made of the toxic action of Argas (P.) miniatus Koch, 1844, using material collected in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This study was conducted in the Iaboratory under controlled temperature and humidity conditions, using chickens (Gallus gallus) and ducklings (Cairina moschata) as hosts. Cutaneous ulcerative lesions were observed after larval attachment. The degree of pathogenicity increased with increasing engorgement of the larvae. Clinical symptoms characterized as tick paralysis were observed in 20 chicks and four ducklings after 3 to 5 days of larval infestation. The most frequent symptoms were: motor incoordination, increased sensibility, paralysis of the feet and wings and ventral flexion of the head. Death resulted from respiratory failure. Post-mortem, the most obvious macroscopic lesions were: atrophy of the spleen, biliary stasis and yellowing of the liver. Histopathological studies showed lesions of the skin, lungs, heart, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands and Iiver. This is the first reference to the toxic effect or tick paralysis dueto the larvae of A. (P.) miniatus.

Abstract in English:
Ten outbreaks of poisoning by Senecio spp. which occurred in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil, from 1978 to 1985, are described. Thirteen post-mortem examinations were performed and addicionally 5 materials sent in were examined. The disease affected cows, steers, heifers and calves. Clinical signs characterized by diarrhea, rectal tenesmus, incoordination and agressiveness, were observed 1 to 4 days before death. Other manifestations of the disease in some animals were progressive weight loss, dermatitis of the nose and subcutaneous edemas. Gross and microscopic pathology were characteristic of the intoxication by pyrrolizidine alkaloids. The gallbladder showed, in few cases, nodules measuring 2 to 3 mm distributed in the whole mucosa. The central nervous sistem showed spongy degeneration of the white matter, in the border between this and the grey matter and sometimes in the grey matter. In every farm in which the disease occurred variable amounts of Senecio brasiliensis, S. selloi, S. heterotrichius, S. cisplatinus and S. leptolobus were present. The first 4 species are experimentally toxic for cattle and chicks. Most outbreaks occurred between July and August. Considering that the intoxication is progressive and that the clinical signs appeared many months after the ingestion of the plant, it is possible that comsumption occurs between May and August, period in which the plant is growing and the disponibility of pasture is considerably decreased. Sheep were not present in any farm in which the disease was diagnosed.

A doença afetou vacas, novilhos, novilhas e terneiros.
Abstract in English:
The ultrastructural changes in the cerebellum of 2 calves experimentally poisoned with Solanum sp. and 1 calf poisoned with Solanum fastigiatum var. fastigiatum are described. The lesions induced were basically the sarne in all three animals. The perikarya of the Purkinje cells contained numerous lipid inclusions similar to those found in the inherited or induced neurolipidoses. These inclusions seemed to derive from the endoplasmic reticulum from which the lamellar bodies, vesiculo-membranous bodies, cytoplasmic membranous bodies and dense bodies take their origin. Similar changes occurred in the axys cylinders and dendrites of these cells. The morphological evidence suggests that the lipidic inclusions are the result of the formation of lipid complexes resistant to metabolism, rather than a lysosomal defect such as occurs in the inherited lipidoses.

Abstract in English:
It was found that 90% of 1 to 9 year old cattle from southwestem Brazil had nodular intestinal lesions of Oesophagostomosis in the final portion of the ileum and in the cecum. The number of nodules varied from 1 to 53 and their diameter from l to 19 mm. The cut surface of the larger nodules showed a dry yellowish caseous material, and some times fragments of Oesophagostomum radiatum larvae could be observed. Bacteriological examination of 400 samples taken from the intestinal wall with and without lesions resulted in isolation of 42 (5,2%) cultures of atypical mycobateria. Thirty cultures originated (71,4%) from nodular material and 12 (28,6%) from the portion without lesion. Twenty three (54,8%) cultures belonged to the Runyon group IV and 19 (45,2%) to group II and III. There were 4 cultures of Mycobacterium scrofulaceum, 1 of the M. terrae-complex and 8 of M. intracellulare. Fifteen (78,9%) of these cultures were isolated from the nodular lesions and only 4 (21,0%) from the part without nodules. The present results suggest that the nodular lesion caused by Oesophagostomun radiatum larvae is a predisposing factor for the penetration and multiplication of atypical mycobateria in the intestinal wall. Consequently inespecific allergic reactions to tuberculinization may develop.
Abstract in English:
Dried and powdered leaves or fruit of Mascagnia rigida (fam. Malpighiaceae), a plant toxic for cattle and goats, were administered by stomach tube to 14 and 10 rabbits, respectively. The plant collected in June, 1984, in the county of Colatina, valley of the Rio Doce, State of Espirito Santo, kept in the shade at room temperature, and administered approximately 3 to 12 months later, was toxic for rabbits. Regarding the lethal dose of the leaves, 4 grams per kilogram of body weight caused the death of all seven rabbits in that group, while 2 g/kg killed none of other seven rabbits. Regarding the fruit, doses of 0.5 g/kg and above caused death of all three rabbits, 0.25 g/kg killed three of four, and 0.125 g/kg one of two rabbits. Thus, the fruit was approximately 20 times as·toxic as the leaves. The first symptoms were noted with leaves from 5h 47min to 11h 35min, and with fruit from 1h 15min to 28h 13min after ingestion. The course of the poisoning in the case of the leaves lasted from 1 to 2 minutes, in the case of the fruit form 1 to 4 minutes. The symptoms were the sarne in rabbits receiving leaves or fruit, those of "sudden death": the rabbits made sudden uncontrolled movements after which they fell on their side; some animals just fell onto their side; some screamed; respiration became difficult and intermittent and the animals died. The main post-mortem findings were in the liver and lungs. Congestion was noted in both the lungs and liver, and liver lobulation could also be observed. Microscopic lesions were present in tiver, kidney and heart, and were essentially degenerative and vascular in nature. These experiments show that the rabbit can be used as small laboratory animal in the continuation of the studies on the toxicity of the plant and in the identification of its toxic principies. Leaves and fruit probably contain the sarne toxic elements.

An outbreak of poisoning by Cestrum parqui in cattle is described in the county of Piratini, Rio Grande do Sul, in southem Brazil, on a farm where the disease has been occurring for more than 10 years. In November, 1983, three animals showed signs of agressiveness and ataxia, dying 24 to 48 hours later. Macroscopic lesions in one animal were characterized by hemorrhages in the pericardium, endocardium, peritoneum and intestine; hard feces with mucus and coagulated blood in the rectum; edema fluid in the gallbladder and gut walls; and an enlarged nutmeg-colored liver. The most important histological lesion noted was centrolobular necrosis in the liver. The disease was reproduced in two calves given doses of 10g or 20g of the green plant per kg of body weight. The animals showed anorexia, atony of the rumen, abdominal pain, apathy. hard feces with mucus, muscular tremors and ataxia, and died 72 and 76 hours after the plant administration. Macroscopic and histologic lesions were similar to those observed in the field case. In one calf which received 5g of the plant per kg, clinical signs were not noted. nor were histological lesions observed when a liver biopsy was performed. Epidemiological aspects of the disease in Rio Grande do Sul are discussed.

In 1985, a program was implemented in the State of Santa Catarina to certify reproductive herds as free of Aujeszky's disease vírus (ADV). The program, based on the micro serumneutralization test for ADV antibodies, requires biannual testing of all reproductive and replacement swine of each herd. Certification of freedom from ADV in given after it is shown that 100% of the swine tested are devoid of those antibodies, and is renewed with negative results on sucessive testing. Testing of 20907 sera from the 71 herds registered with the Swine Breeding Association of the State of Santa Catarina, showed 20692 (99.0%) free of ADV antibodies, 211 (1.0%) toxic for the indicator cells, and four (0.02%) positive. The positive sera carne from two farms, whose animals had recently participated in a pig show in another State, where they carne in contact with infected pigs and were returned to their original herds without being subject to quarantine and testing. The testing of 958 reproductive swine for participation in pig shows resulted in 944 (98.5%) negative and 14 (1.5%) toxic sera. Serological surveillance at Stations for the Testing of Reproductive Swine show e d that 481 (99 .6%) of the 483 sera tested were antibody negative, while two (0.4%) were toxic. Limited sampling of fattening units demonst_rated low levels of infection with ADV. Sera were tested from 61 of the approximately 130,000 fattening units existing in the State, and of 4028 sera, 3939 (97.8%) were negative, 33 (0.8%) were positive, and 56 (1.4%) were toxic. The continuation of the serological surveillance program of swine herds in Santa Catarina is the best guarantee for the contrai of Aujeszky's disease in the State.

Abstract in English:
The fresh leaves of Palicourea marcgravii St.Hil., a shrub poisonous to cattle when administered orally. were also toxic for sheep. The lethal dose varied from 0.5 to 1.0 g/kg of body weight. The plant did not loose its toxicity through drying. ln experiments where sheep were given repeated daily doses of 1 /2.5, 1 /5, 1 /10 or 1 /20 of the lethal dose of dried leaves, na accumulative toxic effect was noted. ln one series of experiments this effect was prominent with daily quantities of up to 1/10 of the lethal dose and less evident in daily quantities of 1/20 of the lethal dose. However, in other experiments only slight effects were seen with daily quantities of up to 1/5 of the lethal dose. The subsequent single administration of the lethal dose to surviving sheep of these experiments showed that the plant did not induce tolerance of immunity, and that the animals did not become more sensitive to the toxic properties of the plant. Symptoms and death of the sheep were caused or precipitated by exercise. P. marcgravii caused the clinical and pathological picture of "sudden death". that is, a poisoning of peracute course. In the experiments consisting of repeated administration of fractions of the lethal dose, sheep frequently exhibited short lasting symptoms of poisoning a few days prior to death, generally when exercised. The symptoms of poisoning by P. marcgravii in sheep were, in order of appearance: tachypnea; tachycardia; reluctance to walk; periods of prostration; walking with small steps and stiff legs; generalized muscular tremors; weakness of the legs which became generalized, making it impossible to remain standing, whereupon the animal lay down on its side; difficult and intermittent respiration; peddling movements with the legs; opisthotonus; and death. Post-mortem examination revealed pulmonary edema which was seen in 8 of the 11 sheep which received the plant repeatedly, but in none of the six which received only one administration. No other lesions were seen consistently. Histopathology revealed regressive and circulatory changes in the liver and kidney, and regressive, inflammatory and proliferative alterations in the heart. As regards kidney and liver changes, there was no difference in nature or incidence between sheep receiving the plant once or repeatedly, but heart lesions, mainly those of a proliferative nature, were seen principally in the sheep from experiments with repeated administrations of the plant.

Selenite-novobiocin (SN) and tetrathionate-novobiocin (TN) broths were compared for the isolation of Salmonella from meat meal, It was also investigated the correlation between the occurrence of the indicator organisms and of Salmonella. SN and TN were equally effective. It was verified that none of these indicator groups (total coliforms and fecal coliforms) are reliable as an index for Salmonella contamination in meat meals. There was no correlation between Salmonella counts and the number of isolated Salmonella colonies.
