Abstract in English:
This review compares the epidemiology and pathology of the following four diseases in cattle: 1) The "doença do peito inchado" (DPI) - a disease of unknown etiology that occurs in southern Brazil, 2) Tetrapterys spp. poisoning (TP), 3) brisket disease (BD), and 4) St. George disease (SGD). All four diseases are of similar clinical appearance. DPI bears some resemblance to BD in its epidemiology, both being associated with certain high altitude environments. However chronic hypoxia related to high altitudes probably can not be considered an importante etiological factor in the pathogenesis of DPI as it occurs in BD, the so-called high-mountain disease. SGD and TP have their own epidemiological features associated with the ingestion of poisonous plants. It is possible to distinguish clinically SGD from the other diseases by the marked subcutaneous edema of the submandibular and facial regions of affected cattle. The auscultation of the heart reveals a typical sound of "gallop rhythm" that distinguishes DPI. TP differs widely from the other diseases in showing gross lesions in the myocardium at necropsy. Hydrothorax is regardecl as an important post-mortem finding in SGD. Histological examination of heart and liver also separates the four diseases easily. A marked and diffuse interstitial fibrosis of the myocardium is characteristic of DPI, whilst degenerative-necrotic changes predominate in TP. No significant microscopic heart lesions occur in SGD and BD. However, SGD presents a specific liver lesion, "peliosis hepatis", that differs from the "cardiac liver" observed in BD and DPI. So it can be concluded that DPI is a disease of yet unknown etiology, as it differs clearly from the other three diseases.
Abstract in English:
Experimental studies were performed on Baccharis coridifolia D.C. (Compositae), a small shrub with the popular name "mio-mio", one of the more important poisonous plants of southern Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay, in arder to find out possible variations in toxicity due to its origin, sex, plant parts and annual variability. Doses which varied from 0.085 to 5.44 g/kg of the dried powdered aerial parts of B. coridifolia were administered in aqueous suspension by stomach tube to 49 adult rabbits. The plant material was collected in five different localities, from four sites in Brazil and one in Uruguay, in the flowering/seeding stage and separated by sex; in some regions collections were made in two successive years. From three of the sites additionally only the leaves of female plants were used for the experiments. Sixteen animals died and one that showed severe symptoms was euthanized together with the contral animal. Nineteen animals that showed slight to severe symptoms, recovered. First symptoms after the administration of the plant were seen, in the fatal cases from 6h32min to 1 day 6h15min, and in the non-fatal cases from 4h03min to 24h00min, after ingestion. The clinical course, in the fatal cases, varied from approximately 6h00min to 4 days 20h23min and, in the non-fatal cases, from 9h25min to 11 days 3h45min. The length of time from first administration of the plant till death varied from 14h20min to 5 clays 2h55min. The lethal dose varied from 0.17 to 5.44 g/kg. The main symptoms were anorexia, modifications in the form, size and consistency of the faeces and hair loss. The main post-mortem alterations were found in the stomach, caecum and liver. There was red colouration of the stomach mucosa. ln the caecum the surface of the mucosa was rough and red and the wall was oedematous. The liver was clearer than normal with perceptible lobulation. Histopathologically these lesions correspond to 1) coagulative necrosis associated with haemorrhages and oedema of the stomach mucosa, 2) haemorrhagic necrosis of the mucosa and oedema and/or haemorrhages of the submucosa of the caecum and 3) cloudy swelling and/or vacuolization of the liver. Greater toxicity of B. coridifolia was associated with more southerly sites of collection in Brazil. The female plant was up to 32 times more poisonous than the male plant; the whole aerial pa1ts of the plant were up to 16 times more poisonous when compared with only the leaves. There was up to a fourfold variation in toxicity from year to year. These differences can be explained by variations in the type and the amount of macrocyclic trichothecenes accumulated in the different parts of the plant, which are believed to be absorbed from the soil fungus Myrothecium verrucaria which produces them. B. coridifolia was compared with B. megapotamica var. weirii, which does not show these variations.
Abstract in English:
In experiments performed in 10 sheep the dried Lantana camara var. aculeata collected at Quatis, State of Rio de Janeiro, was shown not to have lost its toxicity at least up to one year after the plant had been harvested and kept in cloth sacs at room temperature, Both the fresh and the dried plant caused severe disease characterized by photosensitization and death of all animals at the dose of 40 g/kg, given at once; doses of 10 g/kg/day given during 4 following days, also caused severe disease of 4 out of 5 animals, but 2 of the severely diseased animals recovered. A comparison with the experimental poisoning in bovines with the plant collected from the sarne place showed that sheep were as sensible as caule, which are the main victims of the natural poisoning by L. camara. These experimental results are very useful for the survey on the toxicity of the many lantanas (species and taxa) which exist in Brazil, because samples of these plants may be collected in the different regions of Brazil independently of distance and difficulties in the ready performance of the experiments, and because sheep could be used instead of bovines in the experimentation.
Abstract in English:
One hundred samples of the water used for milk production on 10 dairy farms were submitted to counts of total and fecal coliforms, mesophilic microorganisms, Staphylococcus aureus, coagulase negative Staphylococcus and Escherichia colí. The numbers of the indicator microorganisms showed the deficient hygienic and sanitaty conditions on the farms. The results showed also the presence of S. aureus, coagulase negative Staphylococcus and E. coli in 4 (4.0%), 52 (52.0%) and 26 (26.0%) samples respectively. The counts indicate that the water examined is a potential hazard for the sanitaty conditions of the mammary gland and the microbiological quality of the milk.
Abstract in English:
The fresh leaves of Rhododendron ledifolium G. Don were given orally to 11 sheep, in single doses from 2.5 to 15 g/kg. The five animals that received 15g/kg, died. Doses between 6.6 and 10g/kg caused moderate to severe clinical signs, 5g/kg slight symptoms and 2.5g/kg did not cause any symptoms of poisoning. The first clinical signs were seen between 2h05min and 4h, and death occurred between 10h57min and 172h40min after the beginning of the administration of the plant. The course of the poisoning varied from 6h57min to 169h. The clinical signs occurred as short seizures, which progressively grew more frequent and more severe. The animals showed the following symptoms in sequence of their appearance: Progressive restlessness, regurgitation, initially without and !ater with expulsion of ruminal contents through the mouth, pronounced ataxia with falis to the ground, dyspnoea with variations in rhythm, intensity and frequency of the respiratory movements, with periods of apnoea, heart alterations such as arrhythmia, short periods in which the heartbeats varied in frequency, duplication of sounds, extra-sounds or missing sounds, depression, somnolence, manifestations of colic, generalized muscular tremors and dilatation of the pupils. Finally the animals had bouts of severe dispnoea with prolonged apnoea, respiratory arrhythmia, severe heart alterations, muscular weakness, difficulties in moving and to attain or maintain standing position, sternal decubitus, each time longer, lateral decubitus, and in those animals that survived longer, flacid paralysis and finally death. Post-mortem findings consisted only of hemorrhages in some organs and aspiration broncopneumonia in some animals. Significant histopathological findings were seen only in the central nervous system and were mainly swelling of the astrocytes in the grey matter of the spinal cord. In these areas a few necrotic neurons and axonal spheroids were seen. Additionally in one animal central cromatolysis was observed in neurons of the lateral groups of the nuclei of the spinal cord and medulla, besides proliferation and oedema of astrocytes in the cerebrum. The clinical signs seen in the sheep which received non-lethal doses are similar to those produced by colinomimetic drugs and by acetylandromedol; the animals which received lethal doses of R. ledifolium, showed additionally clinical signs of adrenogenic origin.

Abstract in English:
Virulence factors were determined in 43 cultures of Yersinia enterocolitica serotype 0:3, biotype 4, phagetype VIII, isolated from apparently healthy pigs. Twenty one isolates were from tonsils, twelve from feces, six from colon contents and four from tongues. The in vitro tests consisted of examining autoagglutination at 36ºC, and absorption of Congo Red. The virulence assays of Y. enterocolitica were conducted by in vivo tests, testing the invasiveness into guinea-pig eyes and detection of heat stable enterotoxin in suckling mice. The results revealed a higher positivity percentage of the autoagglutination test (76.7%), followed by absorption of Congo Red (53.5%), invasiveness into guinea-pig eyes (20.9%) and detection of heat-stable enterotoxin (7.0%). A higher correlation was found in vitro test as compareci to in vivo tests, which characterized 53.5% Y. enterocolitica isolates tested as virulent and which allowed the conclusion that the simultaneous utilization of autoagglutination and absorption of Congo Red tests may be relevant for the identification of pathogenic strains.

Abstract in English:
Cases of chronic copper poisoning (CCP) were observed in a flock of 120 Ile de France ewes grazed on white clover ( Trifolium repens) pasture in an apple orchard. The orchard was sprayed with copper sulphate 4 weeks after the ewes were introduced. A month later some ewes showed depression, jaundice and hemoglobinuria. Twenty one ewes died representing 17.5 % of the flock. The clinical signs, necropsy and microscopic findings were typical of CCP. The sernm levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in 11 ewes varied from 159 to 510 iu/1, anda sample from the pasture revealed 60 mg/kg of copper. High copper levels of 1313 and 300 mg/kg, respectively, were found in the liver and kidney collected from one of the two sheep on which post-mortem examination was performed. It is suggested that the poisoning was caused by the high level of copper in the pasture, together with the higher susceptibility of mutton sheep to copper poisoning.

Abstract in English:
Pseudocalymma elegans (Vell.) Kuhlm., a plant poisonous to cattle in the State of Rio de Janeiro, also has been implicated, from time to time, as the cause death in horses. ln arder to establish its toxicity to this animal species and the clinical-pathological picture, sprouts of the plant were given orally to 8 horses in doses ranging from 0.8 to 3.2 g/kg. The lethal dose found was 2.4 g/kg. The symptoms of poisoning by P. elegans in the horse were characterized mainly by nervous manifestations such as intense sweating, abrupt involuntary movements of the head or the whole body, ílacid lips, somnolence, instability and falling down of the animal; less evidente were signs of cardiac insufficiency shown by positive venous pulse, dyspnoea and laborious respiration. The first symptoms were seen between 9h15mln and 27h after the start of feeding the plant, and the clinical course of the poisoning varied from 5h08min to 21h11min. The clinical signs of poisoning by P. elegans were similar to those caused by Palicourea marcgravii in horses, but different from those observed in cattle where poisoning by both plants is characterized by "sudden death" due to an acute cardiac insufficiency. Also contrary to the poisoning in cattle, exercise had no influence on the manifestation of symptoms. As in cattle, there were very few post-morten findings. The most important histological lesion was, necrosis of the epithelial cells of the uriniferous tubules with picnosis of their nuclei and vacuolization of the cytoplasffi; frequently resulting in lysis. This lesion was more marked than that observed in cattle, but unlike that caused by P. marcgravii, in the poisoning of horses by P. elegans it was seen mainly in the distal convoluted uriniferous tu bules.

Pseudocalymma elegans (Vell.)
Abstract in English:
The greater toxicity of the fruits when compareci to that of the leaves of Palicourea marcgravii was confirmed by experiments in rabbits. In a case of natural poisoning by Palicourea marcgravii in cattle, focal regressive-proliferative heart lesions were observed, indicating that this kind of lesion may occur also in this animal species, in the sarne way as it was observed in sheep. The lethal dosis of the fresh leaves of Palicourea juruana for cattle was shown to be 2 g/kg. lt was not possible to poison bovines with the dried leaves of Arrabidaea bilabiata. Great variation in the toxicity of the fresh leaves of Mascagnia rigida was shown, and it was not possible to poison bovines with the dried leaves. Experiments in bovines showed that Cestrum laevigatum did not lose its toxicity at least for one year after collection, when it was dried in the shade and kept in cloth bags at room temperature. The diagnosis of poisoning by Cestrum laevigatum in buffalos and goats means that they should be included among the animal species sensible and subject to natural poisoning by this plant, under conditions similar as in cattle. The toxicity of the fresh sprouts and leaves of Cestrum laevigatum var. puberulum was demonstrated by experiments in bovines, causing a sinillar clinical-pathological picture as that caused by Cestrum laevigatum, under sinillar conditions and with similar doses. The dried leaves of Thiloa glaucocarpa were toxic. lt was not possible to reproduce symptoms of poisoning by the administration of rutine, a compound that was isolated in high concentrations from the pods of Dimorphandra mollis. It was not possible to prevent the development or reverse the calcification of the soft tissues of a bovine when leaves of Solanum malacoxylon and a drug with chelated phycoloids were administered simultaneously. The leaves of Manihot glaziovii were shown to be poisonous to bovines. By experiments in bovines the toxicity of Schultesia guianensis was demonstrated. It was shown, that the various "embiras" frequently suspected to poison cattle and sheep can not be considered as poisonous plants of importance to the farmer, as they do not cause the symptoms which are ascribed to them, being unpalatable and only causing diarrhoea.
Abstract in English:
The fresh leaves of Pseudocalymma elegans (Vell.) Kuhlm., a poisonous liane for cattle, were also toxic for sheep when administered orally. The lethal dose was 1,5 grams of the fresh plant per kilogram of body weight. The dried plant was also toxic, but the lethal dose was 1 g/kg, corresponding to 3 g/kg of the fresh plant. In experiments where sheep were given repeated daily doses of 1/5, 1/10 and 1/20 of the lethal dose of dried leaves of P. elegans, a pronounced cumulative toxic effect was noted with daily quantities of 1/5, a moderate cumulative toxic effect with daily doses of 1/10, and only a slight one with daily doses of 1/20 of the lethal dose. The subsequent administration of a single lethal dose to surviving sheep of these experiments showed that the plant did not induce tolerance or immunity to the toxic properties of the plant. P. elegans caused the clinical and pathological symptoms of "sudden death", that is, a poisoning of peracute course, which lasted from a few minutes up to 24 minutes in one case. Symptoms and death of the sheep could be caused or precipitated by exercise. In experiments with both single and repeated administrations of fractions of the lethal dose, a few sheep exibited short lasting symptoms of poisoning during exercise prior to death. The symptoms of poisoning of sheep by P. elegans were, in order of appearance: reluctance to walk, dyspnea, tachycardia, difficulty in remaining standing, generalized muscular tremors, sometimes the animal laid down or fell to the ground, opisthotonus, generalized contractions and death. Post-mortem examination only revealed pulmonary edema in sheep fed repeated fractions of the lethal dose. This occurred in 5 of the 8 sheep which died in these experiments. Histological studies revealed alterations mainly in liver, kidney, heart and lungs. The nature of these changes were circulatory, regressive, inflammatory and proliferative in the heart, circulatory and regressive in the kidney, regressive in the liver and circulatory in the lungs. Changes in the kidney and liver showed no difference in nature or incidence between sheep receiving the plant once or repeatedly. But heart lesions, mainly those of proliferative nature, and changes in the lungs, were seen principally in the sheep from experiments with repeated administrations of fractions of the lethal dose.
