Rabbits have been used as an experimental model in many diseases and for the study of toxicology, pharmacology and surgery in many universities. However, some aspects of their macro anatomy need a more detailed description, especially the abdominal and pelvic arterial vascular system, which has a huge variability in distribution and trajectory. Thirty cadaveric adult New Zealand rabbits, 13 male and 17 female, with an average weight and rostrum-sacral length of 2.5 kg and 40cm, respectively, were used. The thoracic aorta was cannulated and the vascular system was filled with stained latex S-65. The celiac artery and its proximal branches were dissected and lengthened in order to evidence origin and proximal ramifications. The celiac artery emerged between the 12th and 13th thoracic vertebra in 11 (36.7%) rabbits; at the level of the 13th thoracic vertebra in 6 (20%) rabbits; between the 13th thoracic vertebra and the 1st lumbar vertebra in 12 (40%) rabbits; and at the level of the 1st lumbar vertebra in only one (3.3%) rabbit. The mean length of the celiac artery was 0.5cm. The celiac artery first branch was the lienal artery, the second branch was the left gastric artery and the hepatic artery arose from the left gastric artery in all the dissected rabbits. No relation was observed between the celiac artery length and the rostrum-sacral length in rabbits. The number of left gastric and lienal artery branches and the distribution of celiac artery origin are not gender dependent.

The experimental use of coronary arteries of swine to study drug action for clinical and surgical application is an important tool. For this anatomic study about coronary arteries, thirty hearts of Landrace pigs, of both sexes, 5 to 6 months old, weighing 80 to 110 kg, were fixed in 10% formalin. The coronary arteries and their branches were dissected until the visible ramifications. There was one left coronary artery, with length of 0.4-1.2cm, giving off 2 (80%) or 3 (20%) branches. The paraconal interventricular branch, with length of 10-16cm, emitted 16-25 branches, 52.3% for the right ventricle and 47.7% for the left ventricle. The circumflex branch, with length of 7-15cm, emitted 4-13 branches, 55.6% for the left ventricle and 44.4% for the left atrium. There was one right coronary artery, with length of 7.5-11.5cm, which emitted 12-21 branches, 57.4% for the right ventricle and 42.6% for the right atrium. The subsinuosus interventricular branch, length of 3-11cm, emitted 9-22 branches, 50.9% for the right ventricle and 49.1% for the left ventricle. The number of branches of the paraconal interventricular branch and the number of branches of the subsinuosus interventricular branch was similar for both ventricles. The results obtained in the present study compared with the literature indicate that the distribution of the coronary branches in swine and in humans is similar.

The sinoatrial node, for being topographically installed as the initial component of the conduction system, is responsible for the production of the nervous impulses, which determines the cardiac contraction. There have been made studies related to the node’s morphology in order to know the origin, distribution and quantification of the vases in this tissue, however, in spite of the results and quantitative data of the nodal irrigation - arterial vascular conduct and arterial vascular density, at the nodal level - the literature is scarce. With this objective 27 SRD swine hearts, injected with colored resin for macroscopic analysis of the origin and distribution of ANSA (sinoatrial node artery), 3 others injected with watery solution of colloidal coal (dyed nanquim) were used, to mark the route of the vases on the node level for stereological analysis. The atrial arteries originated as well from the right coronary artery as from the left one, with predominance of the first (66.66% and 33.33%, respectively). When originated from the right coronary artery, there existed the following branches: AADAM (right cranial medial atrial artery) in 14 cases, AADAI (right cranial intermedial atrial artery) in 2 cases, and AADAL (right cranial lateral atrial artery) in 2 cases. In 9 cases (33.33%) the following branches originated from the left coronary artery: 4 through branch AASPL (left caudal lateral atrial artery), 2 through branch AASAI (left cranial intermedial atrial artery) and 3 through branch AASAM (left cranial medial atrial artery). Interarterial anastomoses with vessels responsible for irrigation of the sinoatrial node area were observed in most of the cases (25 hearts). The Volume or Reference Volume (V(ref)) of the hearts were 35.32x104µm3. For the stereological variables analyzed, the estimate density of the vessel length (Lv) was 766; the vessel length (L) - mm - was 27.06x105µm; the area’s surface density (Sv) was 182 and the area’s surface (S) - mm2 - was 64.3x106µm2. The estimate of the vascular numeric density (Nv(vasc)) - total of vessels per unit of volume (cm3) was 2.19 10-5, and the total number of vessels in the organ (N(vasc)), estimated by the physical dissector method in combination with the estimate of the number of Euler (Xv), was 773.6832 x10-2. The raised vascular density and total number of vases in the swine’s sinoatrial node area suggests the existence of a vascular perinodal network complex and dense, ratifying the importance of this mark-pass for its blood supply.

The objective of the study was to evaluate whether allergenic extracts of five house dust and storage mite species standardized for humans might be used for the diagnosis of canine atopic dermatitis (CAD). Extracts of Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Pyroglyphidae), D. farinae (Pyroglyphidae), Blomia tropicalis (Glycyphagidae), Lepidoglyphus destructor (Glycyphagidae) and Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Acaridae) were evaluated by intradermal testing in 20 healthy dogs (control) and 25 dogs with allergic dermatitis. A significant difference in the response was observed between the two groups (p<0.05). Only one dog (5%) in the control group reacted to the intradermal test, whereas 14 dogs (56%) in the allergic group were positive for at least one extract (odds ratio = 24.2). Most of the positive reactions observed in the allergic group occurred against the extracts of T. putrescentiae or L. destructor, each inducing reactions in 10 dogs (40%). D. farinae, D. pteronyssinus e B. tropicalis extracts induced reactions in 7 (28%), 3 (12%) and 3 (12%) dogs, respectively. The allergenic extracts standardized for humans evaluated in the present study may be used as a tool to complement the diagnosis of the disease, as well as to select potential allergen candidates for allergen-specific immunotherapy.

Bovine respiratory syncytial vírus (BRSV) has been only sporadically identified as a causa tive agent of respiratory disease in Brazil. This contrasts with frequent reports of clinical and histopathological findings suggestive of BRSV-associated disease. In order to examine a possible involvement of BRSV in cases of calf pneumonia, a retrospective search was performed for BRSV antigens in histological specimens submitted to veterinary diagnostic services from the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Minas Gerais. Ten out of 41 cases examined (24.4%) were positive for BRSV antigens by immunohistochemistry (IPX). Eight of these cases (19.5%) were also positive by indirect immunofluorescence (IFA), and 31 cases (75.6%) were negative in both assays. In the lungs, BRSV antigens were predominantly observed in epithelial cells of bronchioles and less frequently found in alveoli. In one case, antigens were detected only in the epithelium of the alveolar septae. The presence of antigen-positive cells was largely restricted to epithelial cells of these airways. In two cases, positive staining was also observed in cells and cellular debris in the exudate within the pulmonary airways. The clinical cases positive for BRSV antigens were observed mainly in young animals (2 to 12 month-old) from dairy herds. The main microscopic changes included bronchointerstitial pneumonia characterized by thickening of alveolar septae adjacent to airways by mononuclear cell infiltrates, and the presence of alveolar syncytial giant cells. In summary, the results demonstrate the suitability of the immunodetection of viral antigens in routinely fixed tissue specimens as a diagnostic tool for BRSV infection. Moreover, the findings provide further evidence of the importance of BRSVas a respiratory pathogen of young cattle in southeastern and southern Brazil.

Goats of 45 farms in the State of Ceará, Brazil, were treated with anthelmintics for gastrointestinal nematodes, and their resistance to the anthelmintics was evaluated. On each farm 30 kids were weighed, ear-tagged and divided into three groups of ten. The first group received oxfendazole at 4.75mg/kg, the second levamisole at 7.5mg/kg, and the third group remained untreated as control. All goats were drenched according to their individual body weight. Fecal samples were collected from all animals (treated and control) on the day of treatment and 7 days later, to provide material for egg counts and larval cultures. Among 34 surveyed herds 20.6% showed levamisole resistance, 17.6% showed resistance to benzimidazole, and 35.3% had multiple resistance. At the time of the assessment 52.9% of the farmers were using broad spectrum anthelmintics. Only 26.5% of the surveyed herds had nematode populations susceptible to the anthelmintics assessed. The results of larval cultures showed that larvae surviving the treatment with oxfendazole were mainly Haemonchus sp and, to a lesser extent, Oesophagostomum sp; those surviving levamisole treatment were Haemonchus sp, Oesophagostomum sp and Trichostrongylus sp.

An analysis of important aspects of poisoning by plants affecting heart function of cattle in Brazil is presented (1.0). These plants can be grouped in the following way :(1.1) Plants causing "sudden death", a peracute poisoning without significant heart lesions, and (1.2) plants causing a subacute to chronic poisoning with necrosis of heart fibres and fibrosis of the myocardium. Moreover (2.0) a comparison of the action of these plants with plants of similar action from Africa and Australia is made, and also (3.0) the clinical-pathological pictures of poisoning by Palicourea marcgravii (Rubiaceae) and monofluoroacetic acid are compared.
Abstract in Portuguese:

The objective of this work was to determine the sensitivity (α) and the specificity (β) of the superior brachygnathia (SB) test in the early diagnosis of atrophic rhinitis (AR) in pigs. 287 crossbred pigs (LW x L), 70 days old, were examined for the presence or absence of SB and AR lesions. AR positive pigs were those which had turbinate atrophy observed in cross sections of the nose. The results obtained indicated low sensitivity (α = 0,27) and high specificity (β = 0,95) to SB test for the early diagnosis of AR. Utilizing these parameters, the estimated prevalence was ṗ = 0,2115 ± 0,0823, with an error of 38,91% Thus, SB can not be used as a test in the early diagnosis of AR because of its low sensitivity and its very high level of error.

Diverse dental lesions were verified on 11 farms located between 1.2 and 9.6 km from a coal-combustion thermoelectric plant in the municipality of Bagé, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The incisor teeth of some animals appeared opaque with white spots, yellowishbrown discoloration and hypoplasia of the enamel. Gingival hyperplasia was also seen. These lesions were numerous on the farms close to the plant and less frequent on those more distant. The most important alteration was dental wear. Incisor teeth of cattle from farms near the plant were completely worn down by the time the animals were six to seven years of age; the degree of wear was related to the distance between the farms and the plant as a linear function [Y = 4.11 + (- 0.42x); r2 = 0.75 (P < O.OS)]. Histological lesions of permanent incisors were characterized by hyperplasia of the cernentum, proliferation of the dentin, and periodontal pocketing with alveolar bone resorption. Excessive and irregular wear was also observed in prernolar and molar teeth. Sheep presented lesions similar to those observed in cattle; ewes three to four years old showed completely worn down incisors. Fluoride levels in cattle on a farm located 2.45 km from the plant varied from 1091 to 5673 ppm (X̅ = 2539 ppm) in nine humerus bones and from 389 to 2931 ppm (X̅ = 1346 ppm) in 21 mandibles. These levels decreased as the distance from the plant increased; on a farm 7.5 km away, fluoride levels were 386 ppm in humerus bones and 265 ppm in mandibles. The results obtained confirm the diagnosis of fluoride poisoning, a condition that was previously described in the city of Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul, and attributed to pollution cause d by phosphate processing factories. In the Candiota region the enamel lesions were less pronounced and the fluoride levels lower than those observed in Rio Grande, however, the dental wear was much more accentuated in the animals from Candiota. Two factors might be responsible for this dental wear: the abrasive effect of particles eliminated into the air during coal combustion, the most important of which appears to be silica; and the decrease in the resistance of the enamel as a consequence of fluoride poisoning.

Abstract in English:
The effectiveness of a bacterin in the prevention of swine atrophic rhinitis (AR) was tested. The bacterin was prepared with Bordetella bronchiseptica and adsorved to aluminum hydroxide. Six sows were vaccinated at 60 and 100 days of gestation and their litters at seven and 28 days of age. Five sows and their litters were used as an invaccinated control group. All piglets were challenged with B. bronchiseptica at three, four and five days of age. The vaccination significantly reduced the clinical signs (P < 0.001), occurrence and severity (P < 0.01) of nasal turbinate atrophy, but it did not reduce the rate of infection at 70 days of age.
