#2291 - Anomalies in the development of the tubular genital system of slaughtered female buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis)

Abstract in English:

Genital systems of 612 female water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis Lin.) of undefined breed, obtained from slaughterhouses in the State of Para, were studied. A total of 77 (12.6%) animals showed abnormalities. Results from pregnant and non-pregnant animals were considered separately. In the oviducts of pregnant buffaloes, one case (1.3%) of unilateral segmentary aplasia was identified, while three similar cases (3.9%) were noted in non-pregnant buffaloes, as well as one case (1 .3%) with bilateral involvement. A large percentage (44.2%) of the findings were paraovarian cysts: 26 instances (33.8%) of unilateral paraovarian cysts were identified in the mesosalpinx, 11 (14.3%) corresponding to pregnant and 15 (19.5%) to non-pregnant females; eight bilateral cases (10.4%) were also observed, of which three (3.9%) were found in pregnant and five (6.5%) in non-pregnant buffaloes. In the uterus, out of a total of 29 (37.6%) anomalies, seven (9.1%) appeared in pregnant and 22 (28.5%) in non-pregnant buffaloes. A high prevalence (28.6%) of cystic formation on the perimetrium was observed in these animals. Malformations of the cervix were only found in three (3.9%) non-pregnant buffaloes. Two anomalies (2.6%) of the vagina were encountered in non-pregnant animals. Four (5.2%) anomalies were seen in the vestibule, one (1 .3%) in a pregnant animal and three (3.9%) in non-pregnant animals.

#2292 - Poisoning of cattle by Arrabidaeajapurensis (Bignoniaceae) in Roraima, northem Brazil

Abstract in English:

The cause of “sudden death” in cattle in Roraima, northern Brazil, was investigated. These deaths, amounting to 1000-1500 annually, mainly occur when cattle are exercised; they are observed in farms of the “lavrado” region, situated along the large rivers of the area, specially rio Branco, Tacutu and Mucajaí, and less frequently the Uraricoera and Surumu rivers. Observations in the region and feeding trials in cattle identified Arrabidaea japurensis (DC.) Bur. & K. Schum. as the cause of “sudden death”. The fresh sprouts of the plant were given orally to 11 bovines in amounts that varied from 1.25 to 20 g of the plant per kilogram of body-weight. The amount of the plant necessary to cause death varied considerably; 10 g/kg always caused the death of the animals, but smaller doses down to 1.25 g/kg still caused the death of some. The first symptoms of poisoning were observed between 6 hours and 15 minutes and 22 hours and 10 minutes after the administration of the plant. Two of the four animals, which had eaten amounts of 10 g/kg or more, died of “sudden death” without having been exercised. The animals which had received smaller amounts, were driven between 18 and 22 hours after ingestion of the plant, and died suddenly after 1 to 45 minutes of exercise. The clinical signs lasted from 1 to 8 minutes; they were swaying gaint, muscular tremors, loss of stability and falling to the ground, peddling movements with the legs, sometimes moaning and intensive closing of the eyelids, and death. Post-mortem examinations were negative. Histopathologically there was hydropic vacuolar degeneration of the epithelial cells of the distal convoluted tubules in the kidney; this was seen in six of the eight animals which died due to the ingestion of the fresh plant material. Dried sprouts, given 3 and 6 months after they had been collected, had lost about half of their toxicity. The plant had no cumulative effects and did not induce tolerance. Mature leaves werw also toxic.

#2293 - Studies on the congenital transmission of avian lymphoid leukosis virus

Abstract in English:

White Leghorn hens from two commercial lines were identified as shedders or non-shedders of the lymphoid leukosis virus (LL) using the micro-complement fixation test. This test detected the group-specific antigen (gs-ag) of the leukosis/sarcoma group of viruses when used directly on the albumen of unincubated fresh eggs. It was found that 21.4% of line A hens and 17.2% of line B hens eliminated gs-ag into their eggs. Sequential studies of the elimination of the gs-ag, demonstrated that infected hens can be either intermittent or consistent shedders of this antigen in their eggs. Electron microscopy studies demonstrated the presence of type-C viral particles in the pâncreas and in the magnum of the oviduct of hens that had consistently shed the gs-ag in the egg albumen. The indirect immunofluorescence test detected gs-ag in the cytoplasm of peripheral blood leucocytes and was used to detect infected roosters that were utilized as semen donors. Artificial insemination of non-shedder hens with semen obtained from infected rooters resulted in the shedding of gs-ag into the eggs of one of the hens. Moreover, there was seroconversion in 11 of the 26 hens from both lines, inseminated with semen from the infected roosters. In was concluded that LL virus infection could be introduced, through insemination, to non-infected hens using sêmen from infected roosters.
