#1131 - Poisoning ot· cattle by Arrabidaea bilabiata (Bignoniaceae) in the Amazon region of Brazi

Abstract in English:

The cause of the numerous cattle mortalities occurring in the "low areas" (varzeas) of the Amazon region, and characterized by "sudden death", was investigated. After the collection of case histories, the inspection of pastures where deaths occurred and through animal experimentation, the toxicity of the plant Arrabidaea bilabiata (Sprague) Sandw; commonly known as gibata or xibata, a creeping shrub or vine of the Bignoniaceae family, was confirmed. Recently collected leaves or sprouts of the plant were administered orally to 23 bovines; a majority of the animals were between 1 and 2 years of age. Death occurred in nine animals that received the plant in amounts that varied from 2.5 to 15 grams per kilogram of body weight. The reason for the large variation in the toxicity of the plant was not determined. After the administration of the plant, first symptoms of poisoning were observed in the nine animals that died between 3h25 min. and 23h45 min.; the course of the poisoning varied from 5 minutes to 4h4 min.; the animals died between 3h30 min. and 23h50 min. after the administration. In bovines that showed symptoms of poisoning but recovered, first symptoms were observed between 14h29 min. and 23h55 min. after the administration; the course varied from 1h20 min. to 2 days, recovery being complete frorn 20h30 min. to 3 days after administration. Symptoms of poisoning in the animals that died, were instability, lying down rapidly or falling to the ground into an upright position or on their sides, occasional muscular tremors, dyspnea, positive venous pulse, finally lying on its side making peddling movements, at times intensively closing the eyelids, moaning, and death. Exercise had an influence on the appearance of the symptoms in a small number of the animals (3/9), but it was not possible to conclude by the experiments performed, if this was really decisive. In the bovines which recovered, symptoms of poisoning were only observed when the animals had been exercised. These animals were reluctant to run or walk, lay down quickly, staying in a sternum-abdorninal position, had muscular tremors, sometimes dyspnea and positive venous pqlse. Post-mortem examinations were essentially negative. Histopathological examination revealed in three of the nine animals, a characteristic hydropic vacuolar degeneration of the epithelial cells of the distal convoluted tubules in the kidney. Inspection of the pastures in the "low areas" of a great number of farms where mortalities characterized by sudden death had occurred, always revealed the presence of great amounts of Arrabidaea bilabifta. By checking Poisonous plants, Arrabidaea bilabiata, Bignoniaceae, plant poisoning, cattle, pathology case histories, comparing the symptoms of poisoning seen by the farmers and those seen in the experiments, it was concluded that A. bilabiata is the most important poisonous plant in the "low areas" of the Amazon region. It was also noted that most cases of poisoning by A. bilabiata occur during the periods of cattle movement, that is, during July and August, when the cattle are taken to the "low areas", and February and March, when the cattle are transferred from the "low areas" to "higher ground" (terra firme). Cattle eat the plant only when hungry, a condition which occurs especially during these periods; apparently the plant is of low palatability. Exercise, to which the animals are subjected dunng these changes, may be another factor. There are also cases of poisonirtg after the burning of the dry pasture in the "low areas".

#1132 - Plasma concentrations of total estrogen and progesterone as determined by radioimmunoassay in cows at parturition, in relation to the type of obstetrical intervention

Abstract in English:

Plasma concentrations of total estrogen and progesterone were determine d by radioimmunoassay in 49 cows that were brought to the Bovine Obstetrical and Gynecological Clinic, College of Veterinary Medicine of Hanover. Blood samples were taken at parturition and until 36 hours post partum at six hour intervals. At parturition, the average total estrogen concentration in the plasma of animals that underwent cesarian section, forced extration or fetotomy were 5.05 ± 2.88, 4.68 ± 2.44 and 2.34 ± 1.93 nmol/liter, respectively. Large individual variations we"re detected. The average total estrogen concentration detected in cows in the fetotomy treatment group was significantly different from the concentration in cows subjected to cesarian section or force d extraction at the time of parturition (P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively) and 6 hours later (P < 0.001 for both). After delivery, all cows showed a sharp decline in the total estrogen levei in the plasma, with average values of than 1 nmol/1 of plasma being measured at 12 hours and thereafter. No significant differences in progesterone concentrations were detected in the plasma of cows at any time, regardless of the type of obstetrical intervention.

#1133 - Detection of Penicillin in milk with the Radioimmunoassay technique (Charm Test)

Abstract in English:

Eleven dairy cows in different stages of lactation were treated with cefa-lak or cefa-lak combined with Procaine Penicillin G. Four cows treated with cefa-lak were paired with four untreated cows and their milk tested for penicillin residue by the Charm Test. Cows treated with cefa-lak only, had 50% of the samples positive at one sample beyond the withdrawal time. Combination of cefa-lak and Procaine Penicillin G also had positive samples after the recommended withdrawal time. Carry over of penicillin residues through the milking equipment was observed. This finding suggests that milking equipment be completely rinsed after milking treated cows, or that treated cows be milked after untreated cows. Sensitivity of the Charm Test was confirmed and the data indicate that new withholding times should be investigated using more animals, so that a definitive recommendation can be made.

#1134 - Poisoning of cattle by Vemonia rubricaulis (Compositae) in Mato Grosso

Abstract in English:

Vernonia rubricaulis H. et B., a plant of the Compositae family, was shown to cause acute poisoning in cattle when administered orally in quantities of 20 g of the fresh plant per kilogram of bodyweight. The dried plant lost much of its toxicity when kept at room temperature for more than one month. The first symptoms of poisoning in the experiments resulting in death, with the fresh as well as the dry plant, appeared at around 24 hours after the plant had been given, the course of poisoning lasting for about 24 hours; the main symptoms observed were lack of appetite, dry muzzle, exhalation with a slight groaning, apathy, slight head tremors and whole body contractions. Post-mortem examination revealed a nutmeg-like appearance of the cut surface of the liver. The contents of the omasum and large intestine were dry and tinged with blood in the colon. The main histopathological findings were massive necrosis of hepatic cells and hydropic-vacuolar and fatty degeneration of the epithelial cells of the uriniferous tubules. These findings suggest that certaiii unexplained deaths which occur in the Pantanal region, County of Corumbá, and are characterized by massive liver necrosis, could be caused by the ingestion of V. rubricaulis.

#1135 - Low germ cell resistance, bulls family recurrence

Abstract in English:

Clinical examination of the genital system and semen analysis were performed on six bulls, a sire and five of its offspring, during periods that varied between 3 and 38 months. Tissue sections of the testicles of three of the offspring were evaluated histologically. In a total of 22 semen evaluations performed on the sire, eight years old at the last testing, total sperm pathology ranged from 38 to 100%. During three years artificial insemination indexes were studied and showed 13.79% less pregnancies than the mean in four herds of the sarne region over the sarne period. Two of the five offspring studied showed at least one semen sample with acceptable levels of sperm anomalies. Histological examination revealed alterations in the seminiferous tubules with the presence of giant multinucleated cells in the lumen, vacuolization and pyknosis of primary spermatocytes. All results obtained in this study were indicative of testicular hypoplasia with low germ cell-resistance, characterized by low fertility, probably hereditary in origin.

#1136 - Absolute lymphocyte counts and antibodies against enzootic bovine leukosis virus in dairy herds of Rio de Janeiro

Abstract in English:

Fifty-five dairy cows from two herds located in the State of Rio de Janeiro, were evaluated monthly over a six month period for persistent lymphocytosis (PL) and for the presence of plasma antibody to the major glycoprotein (gp51) of bovine leukosis virus (BLV), as evidence of infection. Absolute lymphocyte counts were superimposed on Bendixen's hematological key for bovine leukosis. Animals were considered to have PL when, during the six month period, three absolute lymphocyte counts were above 7000 per mm3 of blood. In herd A, of 15 absolute lymphocyte counts from three antibody-negative cows, 13 (86.7%) were normal and two (13.3%) suspect. Counts from 17 antibody-positive cows from the sarne herd showed 29 (30.5%) normal, 36 (37.9%) suspect and 30 (31.6%) leukotic. In herd B, of 82 absolute lymphocyte counts from 14 antibody-negative cows, 45 (54.9%) were normal, 23 (28.1%) suspect and 14 (17.0%) leukotic. Counts from 21 antibody-positive cows showed that 53 (45.3%) were normal, 40 (34.2%) were suspect and 24 (20.5%) were leukotic. It is concluded that PL is an unreliable criterion to identify cattle infected with BLV in the subtropical environment, and must not be used in programs aimed at controlling or eradicating BLV from infected herds. However, the hematological keys will continue to be useful in the diagnosis of the clinical disease, that is, the bovine lymphosarcoma. The use of the immunodiffusion test to detect antibody to gp51 in the plasma or serum of infected cattle is a simple and sensitive tool in the control of BLV infection.

#1137 - Experimental poisoning of cattle by Plumbago scandens (Plumbaginaceae)

Abstract in English:

Recently colletcted fresh leaves of Plumbago scandens L. (fam. Plumbaginaceae), a small shrub found in the State of Bahia, Brazil, commonly known as "louco" and believed to be poisonous to cattle, proved to be toxic when administerçd orally to 16 young bovines. The lethal dose was found to be 10 grams of the plant material per kg of bodyweight. First symptoms of poisoning were observed towards the end of the adrninistration of the leaves or shortly thereafter. The seven animals which died showed clinical signs which lasted for 4 hours 45 min. to 20 hours, although in one, symptoms persisted for 6 days; in the animals which recovered, symptoms were evident for 6 hours to three and a half days. In the cases with lethal outcome, the animals died from 5 hours 15 rnin. to 6 days, and when they survived, they had recovered between 7 hours and three and a half days, after beginning of the administration of the plant. The symptoms of poisoning by P. scandens were quite uniform and consisted of salivation, slight to severe submandibular edema, dark-greyish appearance of the buccal mucosa, reddish-brown urine, absence of ruminai movements, anorexia, restlessness, and in most cases slight to pronounced meteorism. The main post-mortem findings were edema and thickening of the wall in the cranio-ventral portion of the rumen and in the reticulum. The epithelial layer of the rumen mucosa was easily detached, exposing the lamina propria with or without congestion. The mucosa of the oral cavity and esophagus was dark grey in color. The main histopathological finding was edema of the wall of the rumen and reticulum with. the epithelium being detached. It is not known whether Plumbago scandens is naturally eaten by cattle, and if so, in suficient quantities to cause poisoning. Without this data the inclusion of P. scandens as a toxic plant of economic importance is not warranted.

#1138 - Enzootic bovine leukosis virus infection in cows imported from Uruguay

Abstract in English:

Sixty cows out of a total of 482 animals imported from Uruguay by Dairy Cooperative of Curitiba (CLAC) were sampled in order to verify the presence of antibodies against enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL) virus in their blood. All cows were about 30 months old and many of them were calving for the first time. Eleven (18.3%) cows had antibodies against EBL virus in their plasma which were detected using the immunodiffusion test.

#1139 - A comparative study between the plate and slide immunodiffusion tests in the detection of antibodies against enzootic bovine leukosis virus

Abstract in English:

The agar gel immunodiffusion tests performed in plates and on slides were compared in their efficiency to detect antibodies against the major glycoprotein gp51 of enzootic bovine leukosis virus (BLV). Materiais tested were milk, plasma and serum obtained from cattle belonging to seven dairy herds located in the States of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Both tests were equally inefficient in the detection of antibodies in the milk. The plate immunodiffusion test was more sensitive than the slide test in the detection of antibodies in plasma, although, when the tests were performed with serum, both were equally sensitive in the identification of infected cattle. Out of a total of 1031 sera tested, 361 (35.0%) were identified as positive using the plate test, while the slide test detected 355 (34.4%) positives. It is concluded that- the slide inununodiffusion test can efficiently substitute for the plate immunodiffusion test in the detection of antibodies against gp51 of BLV in the serum, with the additional advantage of utilizing smaller amounts of glycoprotein antigen.

#1140 - Experimental poisoning in cattle by Hurnirianthera ampla and H. rupestris (Icacinaceae), plants of the Amazon region

Abstract in English:

Among the plants in the Amazon region suspected of being. toxic, are two shrubs of the Icacinaceae family, Humirianthera ampla (Miers.) Baehni and Humirianthera rupestris Ducke, both being commonly known as "mairá". The fresh leaves of both plants were shown to be toxic for cattle in experimental studies performed using 16 animals. H. ampla caused the death of three bovines which had ingested doses of 6.3, 13.3 or 13.4 g/kg of bodyweight; 3.3 g/kg produced only slight symptoms of poisoning. The first symptoms in the four animals were seen between 15 and 23 hours after the beginning of the ingestion of the plant, and the course of the poisoning was from approximately 8 to 30 hours; the main clinical signs consisted of digestive disturbances: anorexia, diminished rumen movements, dry muzzle and salivation, and in the animals which died diarrhea (3/4). Post-mortem findings were congestion of the mucosa and the presence of liquid. contents, from the rumen to the large intestine. The most important histopathological changes were vacuolar degeneration of the superficial epithelial cells of the rumen mucosa and their detachment by edema (2/3), and areas of necrosis in the epitelial lining of the rumen (1/3). In the experiments with H. rupestris the dose of 5 g/kg given to tqree bovines did not cause symptoms of poisoning. Doses of 9 .6 and 10 g/kg caused symptoms in one of four animals, whereas doses from 15 to 20 g/kg caused symptoms of poisoning in four of five bovines, resulting in the death of one. First symptoms were seen between 10 and 20 hours after the beginning of the ingestion of the plant. The course of the poisoning was between 46 hours and 6 days. SymJ?toms were also characterized by digestive disturbances: anorexia and dirninished rumen movements; the animals were thirsty and the one that died had diarrhea. Post-mortem findings and histopathological changes were necrosis of the epithelium of rumen and reticulum. The dried leaves of H. ampla had lost almost all toxicity by two mottths after collection. Amounts corresponding to at least five times the original lethal dose caused only slight, brief symptoms of poisoning. The occurrence of poisoning by H. ampla and H. rupestris under natural conditions, however has not yet been confirmed.
