Abstract in English:
Feline injection-site sarcomas in felines account for more than 40% of cutaneous and subcutaneous neoplasms in felines. The present study aimed to describe the macroscopic and histomorphological findings of feline application/injection sarcomas. Samples from 31 feline tumors with a history of feline application/inflammation sarcoma were re-evaluated regarding histological subtype, mitotic index and score, depth of tissue invasion, and presence of inflammation considering the location, intensity and predominant cell types. Of the 31 samples from felines diagnosed with sarcoma at the application/inflammation site, 87.15% were cats with no defined breed (NDB), with a mean age of 8.5 years. The predominant anatomical sites were the back and flank/abdomen, both with 29% (9/31), and the prevalent histological subtype was fibrosarcoma at 77.4% (24/31), followed by anaplastic giant cell sarcoma at 12.9% (4/31) and myxosarcoma 9.6% (3/31). The histological grade with the highest number of cases was III (51.6%), followed by Grade II (35.4%) and I (12.9%). The mean of the longest axis measurements varied between the different tumor grades without being significant, with the average being 2.5±2.79cm in Grade I tumors and 3.2±2.28cm in Grade II tumors. and 4.68±2.07cm in Grade III tumors. Necrosis was observed in 74.2% of tumors. The tissue inflammation score was mild to moderate in 58% of cases and severe in 32.2%, with lymphocytic and lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates being prevalent, with 25.8% each, followed by lymphoplasmohistiocytic with 22.6%. The infiltration depth was 38.7% in muscle tissue, followed by 32.2% in the subcutaneous tissue. Pleomorphism was accentuated in 51.6%. Desmoplasia was moderate in 45.1%. Satellite nodules were present in 29% of cases, and 19.4% had macrophages with intracytoplasmic content suggestive of adjuvants. Surgical margins were infiltrated (M1) in 48.4% and narrowed in 25.8% (M2). The anatomical locations observed were different from those recommended by the Vaccine-Associated Feline Sarcoma Task Force (VAFST); in most cases, the adjuvanted macrophage was not present. From this data, we can suggest that sarcomas in felines are not only correlated to the vaccine application, corroborating the hypothesis that any material, whether liquid or solid, and any chronic inflammatory process in the subcutaneous tissue of cats can induce the entity if they are predisposed to do so. The detailed histomorphological data evaluated in this study were key points and provided important information about tumor behavior, being a tool for clinical-oncological decision-making.

Abstract in English:
The green-winged saltator Saltator similis (d’Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837) is a passerine bird highly valued by bird breeders and a target of illegal wildlife trafficking. Coccidian chromists are etiological agents of coccidiosis, which may be asymptomatic and enzootic in bird populations when environmental conditions are favorable. However, epizootic outbreaks with severe disease can occur due to environmental changes. In this context, this study reports a case of coccidiosis in a free-living juvenile specimen of S. similis captured at the Itatiaia National Park in southeastern Brazil. Typical clinical signs of coccidiosis were observed, and it was associated with greenish mucoid diarrhea containing a high density of coccidian oocysts. Three Isospora spp. were specifically identified in 14 fecal samples (fecal droplets) collected over two hours. Isospora saltatori (Berto, Balthazar, Flausino & Lopes, 2008) had the highest density and positivity throughout most of the collection period. Finally, this paper discusses the importance of the continuous evaluation of the health of birds as bioindicators and their coccidian ecological biomarkers as one of the strategies for evaluating the conservation status of Itatiaia National Park.

Abstract in English:
Cryptococcosis is a fungal infection that commonly affects dogs and cats, often manifesting with neurological involvement. This study investigated the neuropathological characteristics of cryptococcosis in nine cats and two dogs submitted to necropsy through gross pathology and histopathological analysis. Clinical history, lesion location, fungal burden, type and intensity of inflammatory infiltrate, lesions in nervous parenchyma, and morphological characteristics of yeast cells were evaluated. Additionally, fungal morphological criteria, such as capsule and yeast wall thickness and budding frequency, were analyzed in each neurolocation. The Alcian blue stain method was utilized to enhance the visualization of yeasts. Debilitating and/or immunosuppressive conditions were described in five cases. Two cats were recently adopted from the streets, and one cat was treated with corticosteroids. One dog had severe cachexia and generalized weakness, and another dog had leukopenia with left shift. Only six cases (54%) had neurological signs. Gross central nervous system (CNS) lesions were found in five cases and appeared as irregular, friable, soft, gelatinous, and grayish masses with distinct borders. The telencephalic cortex and the cerebellum were the most frequently affected CNS locations observed in all cases. The first exhibited a higher fungal burden and a milder inflammatory response than other neurolocations. The cerebellum was also affected in all cases but showed a slightly higher inflammatory response and a lower fungal burden compared to the telencephalic cortices. Additionally, lung involvement was observed in all cases as well. The inflammatory intensity associated with the yeasts in the CNS was predominantly mild to moderate, being severe only in two cases, and the fungal burden was more often moderate or severe, being mild in only two cases. The observed heterogeneity in the inflammatory response and fungal burden reveals the complex nature of this infection. Other affected nervous tissues were the optic nerve, the spinal cord nerve roots and the ganglia, mostly in cats. In conclusion, our study shows the neuropathological features of cryptococcosis in a case series in cats and dogs, emphasizing the importance of considering specific neurolocations to diagnose this fungal infection and contributing to a better understanding of the simultaneous involvement of the respiratory and nervous systems.

Iguanids are susceptible to several bacterial infections, especially those caused by Gram-negative bacteria. The development of these diseases in reptiles is related to management, inadequate sanitary conditions, and immunosuppression. This study aims to describe the anatomopathological and microbiological aspects of a case of co-infection by Plesiomonas shigelloides, Citrobacter freundii and Aeromonas jandaei diagnosed in a free-living green iguana (Iguana iguana). Macroscopically, the lesions were mainly located in skeletal muscle, myocardium, small intestine, and liver, characterized by white-yellowish, multifocal, friable, irregular areas associated with necrosis and hemorrhage. In the histopathological analysis, basophilic bacillary structures corresponding to bacterial aggregates were observed in the skeletal muscle, myocardium, hepatic parenchyma, kidney, stomach and small intestine associated with areas of thrombosis, necrosis and hemorrhage. The diagnosis of sepsis by P. shigelloides, C. freundii and A. jandaei was confirmed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight (MALDI-TOF) associated with the anatomopathological and microbiological findings observed in this case.

Abstract in English:
Rabies is a fatal viral disease that affects animals and humans and is widespread among national ecological systems. We describe the anatomopathological and immunohistochemical findings of a case of rabies in a jaguarundi (Herpailurus yagouaroundi) found in a rural peri-domestic area after showing aggression and attacking two animals. Histopathology of brain tissue showed lymphoplasmacytic meningoencephalitis associated with intracytoplasmic eosinophilic inclusion bodies in neurons, gliosis and neuronophagia. The diagnosis of rabies was based on the lesions and confirmed by immunohistochemistry and qPCR. In Brazil, rabies in wild felines of the genus Puma has only been described in animals through serological examinations. The pathological findings are essential for the diagnosis and elucidation of the participation of this species in the wild cycle of the disease, as well as in the maintenance and conservation of the balance of wild fauna.

Abstract in English:
The aim of this study was to describe the pathological findings and causes of jaundice in 44 cats (Felis catus) over a six-year period. The cats were from two Brazilian metropolitan areas: 34.1% were female, 56.8% were male, and 9.1% had no information regarding their sex. Their ages ranged from 6 months to 13 years. Most of the cats examined were of a mixed breed (40/44), whereas the others were Angora (2/44), Oriental Short Hair (1/44) and Persian (1/44). All animals had mild to marked jaundice, and 39 were diagnosed with mild to marked anemia. The classification of icterus types (pre-hepatic, hepatic and post-hepatic) was based on gross and microscopic findings. Of the 44 animals, 10 were classified as pre-hepatic icterus, 33 with hepatic icterus and seven with post-hepatic icterus. In some cats, two types of icterus were found, of which five were classified as pre-hepatic and hepatic icterus, and one case was hepatic and post-hepatic icterus. According to the gross and microscopic findings, the cause of pre-hepatic icterus was idiopathic hemolytic anemia. The most frequent cause of hepatic icterus was hepatic lipidosis (26/44), followed by perihepatitis and hepatitis compatible with feline infectious peritonitis, lymphoma, glycogenic degeneration, cholangiocarcinoma and metastatic myeloid leukemia. In animals with post-hepatic icterus, the causes included cholangitis due to Platynosomum spp. infection, cholangioma of the common hepatic duct, and chronic cholangitis. Understanding the etiopathogenesis of jaundice requires an accurate clinic-pathological study and concomitant causes of the disease in cats should be considered.

This paper describes, within the framework of a retrospective study, the epidemiological and clinicopathological findings in goats and sheep with compressive lesions of the central nervous system (CNS) in Pará. This study included eight sheep and three goats from 2005 to 2022 by reviewing the clinical files of animals with CNS compressive lesions managed by the team of the Carlos Tokarnia Veterinary Hospital of the Institute of Veterinary Medicine of the Federal University of Pará. The animals with clinical signs were subjected to a general and specific clinical examination of the nervous system. All animals included in the study were necropsied, and the clinical signs were found to vary according to the location of the lesion. At necropsy, changes such as an abscess with osteomyelitis of the vertebral body with pathologic fracture and spinal cord compression, submeningeal abscess in the skull floor, subarachnoid hematoma, and congenital bone changes causing spinal cord compression and ankylosing spondylitis were noted. These findings indicate that a comprehensive clinical examination of the CNS in conjunction with necropsy findings is essential to characterize the clinical picture, localize the lesion, and determine the cause of the disease. The most affected medullary segment was between T3 and L3. Therefore, these diseases should be included in the list of differential diagnoses in farm animals with nervous system symptoms.

This study aimed to evaluate the aspartate transaminase/alanine transaminase (AST/ALT) ratio in healthy dogs and dogs with hepatic and extrahepatic diseases. Twelve different groups of animals were considered in the study: Control, patients with Acute hepatopathy, and Chronic hepatopathy and patients with extrahepatic diseases such as Pyometra, Fractures/trauma, Intoxication/poisoning, Leishmaniosis, Hemoparasitosis, Oncologic, Gastrointestinal, Skin problems and Nephropathy. A retrospective study was made with 509 exams. Hematological and serum biochemical results correlated to the ratio at time zero (M0) and 48 hours (M48) after the first care, allowing for the prediction of the outcome. Animals with Acute hepatopathy showed AST/ALT ratios 84% above the upper limit of the ranges obtained from Control animals. Animals with Chronic hepatopathy showed higher averages than acute. Animals from Pyometra, Fractures/trauma, and Intoxication/poisoning groups showed higher averages of the AST/ALT ratio (2.67, 2.54, 2.21) than those from other groups. The correlation between the AST/ALT ratio in serial assessments showed that when animals double the value of the ratio in 48 hours, they tend to have a 2.5 greater probability of dying.

Understanding primate helminth fauna through the characterization of the associated diseases and parasitism, clinicopathological behavior, and parasite-host relationship is crucial in determining the impact of parasitic infections on free-living and captive species. The present study aimed to describe the primary clinical and anatomopathological aspects of parasitism in non-human primates (NHP). Necropsy records of NHPs diagnosed with endoparasitosis at the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory of the “Universidade Federal da Paraíba” were reviewed to obtain epidemiological, clinical, and pathological data, while samples were collected for parasitological identification at the time of necropsy. All animals were obtained from the cities of Cabedelo and João Pessoa, Paraíba, Brazil, from screening and monitoring centers for animals seized from illegal trafficking in this state. Twenty-four cases of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary parasites affecting primate species belonging to species of the Sapajus and Callithrix genera were identified. In contrast, Molineus torulosus was identified in the intestinal serosa of 16 animals. Further, there were five cases of Trypanoxyuris callithrix, two cases of Platynosomum illiciens infection, and one case of Dipetalonema gracile. The clinical and pathological behaviors of these diseases ranged from asymptomatic infections, considered based on necropsy findings in 14 cases, to cases with characteristic clinical manifestations associated with the cause of death of the animals in 10 of the 24 cases. Identification of the clinical behavior and pattern of pathological lesions can contribute to a better understanding of the parasite-host relationship and aid in the adequate diagnosis of these diseases.
