The competitive enzyme immunoassay (CEIA) for the serological diagnosis of brucellosis in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) was evaluated by comparing its results with those obtained by the complement fixation test (CFT) and rose Bengal test (RBT). Four hundred and seventyseven sera were tested by CEIA and RBT, and 465 of these were tested by CFT. Sera with a titre equal to or higher than 1/4 in CFT and CEIA were considered as positive. To determjne the relative sensitivity and specificity of CEIA, animals with a positive result to RBT and-to CFT were considered as diseased, and animals with a negative result to both of those tests were considered as non diseased. Sera with disagreeing results for both of these tests were excluded from the analysis. The results showed an agreement of 97.42% between CEIA and CFT and na agreement of 95.39% between CEIA and RBT. The relative sensitivity of CEIA was 100% and its relative specificity 98.55%. These data show that the performance of CEIA little differed from the one of the other two tests, suggesting that CEIA may be an useful tool for the serological diagnosis of brucellosis in buffaloes. |
