ABSTRACT.- Langenegger J., Langenegger C.H. & Oliveira J. 1981. [Treatment of bovine tuberculosis with isoniazide.] Tratamento da tuberculose bovina com isoniazida. Pesquisa Veterinária Brasileira 1(1):1-6. Projeto de Patologia Animal, EMBRAPA, Km 47, Seropédica, RJ 23460 Brazil.

In a herd of 210 Holstein cattle, the intradermal tuberculin test revealed 149 positive reactors (70.9%). Tuberculosis was clinically evident in 21 animais (14.1%), the diagnosis being confirmed by both histology and the isolation of Mycobacterium bovis. The disease was treated with pure crystalized isoniazide, administered orally in doses of 25 mg/kg/day. The initial 60 doses were given on consecutive days and the remaining 60 doses three times a week on alternating days. During the medication, five clinically ill animals with advanced tuberculous lesions died, while the remaining sick animals recovered slowly. The efficacy of the therapeutic treatment was monitored for three years. Necropsy and bacteriological testing were done on 28 animais that died from other causes during the experimental period. Shrunken tuberculous lesions. Were found in eight of the animais necropsied, surrounded and invaded by an intense reaction of fibrous connective tissue. Direct culture and inoculation of suspect material into guinea pigs proved negative in all cases. Tuberculin testing, begun one month after the termination of the medication and continued at intervals of two, three and fout month periods, permitted the accompaniment of the allergic desensitization over a period of 28 months. The mean o f the increased thickness of the skin fold at the site of tuberculin inoculation of 149 animais was 7.5 mm before treatment with isoniazide and gradually fell to 1.4 mm by the end of the observations. At the termination of the experiment, only five animals showed reactions above 3 mm. Considering these animais and the five that died during medication as incured, the therapeutic efficacy of the treatment with isoniazide was 93.28%.
